Ashamed to return home after her expulsion, she looked for work in Bucharest and discovered a talent for dressmaking. She defied her father's orders to turn down a scholarship that took her to Bucharest, and got herself expelled from that school when she responded to a priest/teacher's vicious diatribe against the Jews by hurling a bottle of ink at him. She was born into a large family in rural Romania between the wars and grew up feisty and willing to fight back physically against anti-Semitism from other schoolchildren. From its opening pages, in which she recounts her own premature birth, triggered by terrifying rumors of an incipient pogrom, Bernstein's tale is clearly not a typical memoir of the Holocaust. A striking Holocaust memoir, posthumously published, by a Romanian Jew with an unusual story to tell. ![]()

6/21/2023 0 Comments The spellman files by lisa lutz![]() When not compiling Suspicious Behavior Reports on all her family members, staking out her neighbor, or trying to keep her sister, Rae, from stalking her "best friend," Inspector Henry Stone, Izzy has been busy attempting to apprehend the copycat vandal whose attacks on Mrs. Over weak coffee and diner sandwiches, Izzy unveils the whole truth and nothing but the truth - as only she, a thirty-year-old licensed professional, can. But before he can build a defense, he has to know the facts. When the (displeased) management refuses to bail Izzy out, it is Morty, Izzy's octogenarian lawyer, who comes to her rescue. She's been (obsessively) keeping surveillance on a suspicious next door neighbor (suspect's name: John Brown), convinced he's up to no good - even if her parents (the management at Spellman Investigations) are not. ![]() When Izzy Spellman, PI, is arrested for the fourth time in three months, she writes it off as a job hazard. ![]() Now the Spellmans, a highly functioning yet supremely dysfunctional family of private investigators, return in a sidesplittingly funny story of suspicion, surveillance, and surprise. Their first caper, The Spellman Files, was a New York Times bestseller and earned comparisons to the books of Carl Hiaasen and Janet Evanovich. ![]() 6/21/2023 0 Comments Tinted Lenses by Jackie Williams![]() ![]() ![]() The participants passively viewed pleasant, neutral or unpleasant images from the International-Affective-Picture-System (IAPS), while wearing none, blue, red, yellow or green tinted-lenses that were controlled for luminance. In this study, we systematically evaluated how color-tinted lenses modified our participants’ psychophysiological responses to emotion-inducing images. Besides mediating harsh lighting conditions, some evidence suggests that color-tinted lenses can influence how humans respond to emotional events. The use of color-tinted lenses can introduce profound effects into how we process visual information at the early to late stages. 4Carl Zeiss Vision International GmbH, Aalen, Germany.3Department of Human-Centered Ubiquitous Media, Institute for Informatics, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, Munich, Germany. ![]() 2Department of Perception, Cognition and Action, Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, Tuebingen, Germany.1Institute for Ophthalmic Research, Eberhard Karls University Tuebingen, Tuebingen, Germany.Tim Schilling 1,2*, Alexandra Sipatchin 1,2, Lewis Chuang 2,3 and Siegfried Wahl 1,4 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() RELATED: HBO Max’s The Tourist Photos Reveal First Look at Jamie Dornan The series will mark the third collaboration between Bernthal and Green, following Warner Bros.’ King Richard, starring Will Smith and releasing on November 19, and Amazon’s drama series The Bottoms, created, co-written by, and starring Bernthal. With Thanksgiving turkeys cooking in ovens across town, no one wants to spend much time on what looks to be an accidental shooting with an arrow. Gamache is sure to have his hands full trying to teach her while wrapping things up swiftly. ![]() ![]() Alongside his regular team is Agent Yvette Nichol, so new that she has never worked a scene. Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, head of Homicide with the Sûreté du Québec, is called to Three Pines to investigate. With no known enemies, Jane’s death could only have been an accident, though the small pool of blood and no visible weapon open many questions and require some police presence. Local artist and retired teacher, Jane Neal, was loved by many, which made the discovery of her body all the more troubling. Her writing style and setting this novel in the bucolic community of Three Pines, Quebec, pulled me in early and kept me enthralled until the very end. A strong recommendation from a friend helped me decide to embark on a binge of the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series, penned by Canadian author Louise Penny. ![]() 6/19/2023 0 Comments She persisted ruby bridges![]() ![]() Ruby's bravery and perseverance inspired children and adults alike to fight for equality and social justice.
